Story of First World War soldier Willie McBride uncovered

Written and recorded by Eric Bogle in 1981, The Green Fields of France explores the life and death of a young solider known as Willie McBride.

And now the soldier's history has been traced to Armagh according to a local historian. 

The song recalls the horror and futility of the First World War and the great loss of life suffered through the personal story of Bogle who found and sat down beside the grave of the 21 year old in France.
