North west groups invited to join centenary celebrations

Local organisations are being invited this week to contribute to plans for a programme of local events marking the centenaries of the 1916 Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme.

A number of grants are being made available to organisations hoping to celebrate the historic era between 1913–23, and tell the stories of how lives were impacted by events locally.

Following a Council Motion in July 2015, a working group was established ‘to mark the 100th anniversary of 1913-1923 in a fitting and dignified manner’.

Council has approved £50,000 funding which includes £10,000 of small grants up to £1,000 to support community activity, and two large funds of up to £20,000 for events to commemorate both the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, yesterday called on local groups representing all community areas to get involved. “This year sees the anniversary of two of the most significant events in modern history, and it is only fitting that we mark the occasion here in the city with a number of events which appropriately reflect their impact on our country,” she said.

“We also want to recognise the diverse narratives of the decade from 1913–1923, and this is a great opportunity for local communities to tell their own stories and remember this influential era.

“I would really encourage local groups to take this opportunity to contribute to the city’s plans and explore ways they can fittingly celebrate a chapter that shaped the course of history.”

Festivals and Events Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council Karan Leonard said: “When planning events for inclusion in the programme, it is important that groups keep in mind the context of the celebration and the shared experiences of the people of the city.”
