Hundreds of locals were involved in the planting of thousands of trees at Faughan Valley recently to create a Centenary Wood in collaboration with the Woodland Trust. 

Brackfield Wood situated just outside Derry~Londonderry is one of only four flagship woods across the UK being created to commemorate the First World War.

The charity aims to plant 40,000 trees as a lasting and respectful tribute to the people of Ireland who lived and served during the war. The Woodland Trust will also offer members of the public the chance to dedicate a tree in memory of a loved one or a community.

'It's the perfect location,' said Patrick Cregg, Director of the Woodland Trust. 'The wood - still in its infancy - stretches quietly by the banks of the river, in an incredibly scenic part of the country.

'Our plan is to link nearby pockets of existing woodland and to create a continuous corridor for the valley's precious inhabitants,' he added.
