A First World War inspired picnic will take place at Castle Park in Bangor this August 1.

The event is a collaborative effort between North Down Borough Council and the Woodland Trust.

The day will include live brass band music, Edwardian games and food stalls. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own picnic and take in living history shows as well getting their hands on First World War memorabilia from North Down Museum's collections.

Dame Mary Peters, a supporter of the Woodland Trust, will also offer a hand in a commemorative tree planting ceremony in memory of those who played a part in the war.

Patrick Cregg, director of the Woodland Trust, said: 'We’re creating a flourishing Centenary Wood in the beautiful Faughan Valley, in the north west. This new wood will be a living and lasting tribute to the people of Ireland who played a part in the First World War.

'Working together with the local Council, we’re now delighted to have the opportunity to offer a special event, with a First World War theme, closer to home. Dame Mary Peters’ attendance will be the icing on the cake, and we really hope that local people and visitors will join us for a wonderful afternoon.'
