Easter Rising app offers tour of Dublin

A new smart phone app will offer a one hour tour across some of the main sites caught up in the Easter Rising.

Beginning with the declaration of the proclamation at the GPO on Easter Monday 1916, the tour offers a historical recap of events up until surrender just five days later.

Recorded for the 75th anniversary, the tour has been digitally enhanced to include a slideshow and music. The recording was scripted and produced by the late Abbey Theatre Director Tomás Mac Anna and is narrated by broadcaster Donncha Ó Dúlaing.

A total of 12 sites are included in the tour including Liberty Hall, Boland's Mill, St Stephen's Green and the Four Courts.

'No government funding was given or sought. Instead, the continued goodwill of all artists and participants made this project work,' said the app's Project Manager Cormac Breathnach.

'For the first time in our history, this one-hour app taking in the rebel outposts is digitally available worldwide. Anyone with an interest in Irish history can download it. If you can’t travel or walk, the listening is good of itself.'

The app will be available to download from Friday, December 4 for both Apple and Android. The app costs €1 with proceeds going to the National Graves Association.
