About this Event

This free thirteen-week history course on the Irish Revolution will examine the key events and personalities in Ireland from 1916 to 1923 and be presented in an accessible manner.

Commencing on Thursday 15 July and organised by Cabra Library, the course will be delivered for thirteen weeks via Zoom on Thursdays at 1pm, concluding on Thursday 7 October. Each class will be approx. one hour in length, featuring a 30-minute lecture followed by a 30-minute discussion of primary source documents and essays about women who played a role during the revolutionary era.

Places are limited to ensure greater engagement and discussion.

The classes of the course will deal with the following topics:

· The 1916 Easter Rising

· After the Rising and the Battle of the Somme

· The Conscription Crisis and the end of the First World War

· The Rise of Sinn Féin and the 1918 General Election

· The First Dáil Éireann

· The War of Independence: Part 1 (1919)

· The War of Independence: Part 2 (1920)

· Bloody Sunday 1920

· The War of Independence: Part 3 (1921)

· Reaction to the Anglo-Irish Treaty

· From Treaty to War

· The Irish Civil War: Part 1 (1922)

· The Irish Civil War: Part 2 (1922-23)

This course will be led by Dr James Curry, a Dublin City Council Historian in Residence (North West Area) who holds postgraduate history degrees from Trinity College Dublin and NUI Galway.
