The King's Speech

On 21 June 1921, King George V opened Northern Ireland’s first parliament at Belfast City Hall. One hundred years on, Terra Nova Productions, in partnership with young people from throughout the city, created and staged ‘The King’s Speech’ in the same council chamber where King George V delivered his speech.

In the autumn, depending on COVID-19 restrictions at the time, Belfast City Council also hope to have a limited run of performances of ‘King George V’s Speech’ for schools and youth groups in the city.

Belfast City Council's Decade of Centenaries programme is funded by The Executive Office. It commemorates a decade of key historical events between 1912 and 1922 that shaped Northern Ireland and Ireland.

They have also been awarded funding from the Shared History Fund, which The National Lottery Heritage Fund is delivering on behalf of The Northern Ireland Office, to deliver a number of projects to mark Northern Ireland’s centenary year.
